What is a Medical Abortion?

A medical abortion is typically a medication used to bring about an abortion. The combination of chemicals in RU-486 is more the 95% effective during the first 50 days of pregnancy. The alternative is surgical abortion. The chemicals used are not the same as those used in the Morning After Pill.

When is Medical Abortion Used?

Before considering an abortion, you must confirm that you’re pregnant and determine how long you’ve been pregnant. A medical abortion is an option up to nine weeks after the start of your last menstrual period.   • Side effects include heavy bleeding, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and cramping.
  • If the medical abortion fails, a surgical abortion will be required.
  • The abortion pill is not the same as the Morning After Pill.
  • Most medical abortions are completed within 2 weeks, but can take up to 3 or 4 weeks.
